Lee Yong-Koo

Abstract
Gastrofiberscopy is now considered to be one of the essential methods for diagnosis of upper gastrointestinal disease. A clinical analysis was carried out on 5464 cases who had been given gastrofiberscopic examination and/or biopsy from October, 1984 to September, 1987 in Wonkwang University hospital. The results obtained were as follows ; 1) Of the total 5464 cases, 3133 cases were male and 2331 cases were female patients. The most prevalent disease was chronic gastritis(35.5%), and the frequency of other upper gastrointestinal diseases were peptic ulcer(15.6%), cancer(9.7%), erosive gastritis(7.9%) and esophageal valix(2.9%) in decreasing order. 2) In the case of chronic gastritis, male to female ratio was 48:52, which showed similar1 distribution by sex. But in the cases of peptic ulcer, cancer and erosive gastritis, male was predominant with a male to female ratio of 79.9:20.1, 72.6:27.4 and 64.4:35.6 respectively. 3) The age incidence in erosive gastritis and peptic ulcer show that most cases occured within the second and fifth decade of life respectively. Peptic ulcers were most frequently observed in the fifth decade. Most cancer patients were between fourth and sixth decade, but a few were below fourth decade. 4) Indigestion was the most common symptom of complaint(19.25%). Epigastric fullness( 17.44%), abdominal pain( 14.59%) and hunger pain were also frequently noted in order of frequency. A small proportion of patients showed non specific complaint(5.73%). 5) The chief complaint of chronic gastritis was indigestion followed by epigastric fullness and foreign body sense of substernal area, in decreasing order. In the case of peptic ulcer, hunger pain and indigestion were predominant smyptoms. 6) During the last 3 years there was no tendency of increase for any specific disease, but from seasonal viewpoints the numbers of patients were increased in summer and decreased in autumn.
